Witches’ Waltz

From a fevered dream the soldier wakes
Mounts and rides to learn his fate
At the break of dawn on a distant plain
He must lead a charge…will he be slain?
Will ravens feed on his bloody flesh?
Will he never again touch a maiden’s breast?
Through the deep woods he hears their chant
Reins to the fire where the witches dance
Singing, “Moonlight-light ‘n bones,
“Moonlight-light ‘n bones awaiting…”

An old one beckons, reads his palm ‘n sighs,
“If you stay you live, if you go you die…”
As he turns away, she gravely intones,
“At morrow’s end will lie your bones…”

The witches waltz as the soldier rides
Their voices call in the wind through the night
Singing, “Moonlight-light ‘n bones,
“Moonlight-light ‘n bones awaiting…”

On the empty plain grasses grow
Where he led the charge long ago
Grasped his sword for liege and lord
Who knew him not nor even mourned

And the witches waltz as the soldier rides
Their voices call in the wind through the night
Singing, “Moonlight-light ‘n bones,
“Moonlight-light ‘n bones awaiting…”
