From the recording The Dealer
Lyrics
Hero
Hero was the pick of the litter
Say “Sic ‘em” he’d swim a flooding river
When our old bull went wild, Hero got riled
And chased that bull up from the timber
Hero would be the puppy’s name
From the day a stray came up our lane
When that big stray dog growled
Hero stood his ground
And that stray turned tail and ran away
Hero was true and never roamed
Faithful to his people and home
He kept the coyotes at bay
And at milk time every day, fetched
The cows up to the barn all on his own
Hero ran rabbits to the ground
At our feet he’d lay them rabbits down
While we ate rabbit stew, Hero ate rabbit too
A better dog could not be found
But sad, sad story, Hero died one morning
When a black car went racing past our farm
We found him by the road lying stiff and cold
And we buried Hero on the hill
We buried Hero on the hill…
